I’m into the Offset Duo. I think that we have a long and fruitful partnership ahead of us.

Review by The Trek

Ultralight luxury at its finest, the Offset Duo combines the most sought after tent features with the roomiest interior in its class. The Offset's living space is wider, longer, and has more headroom which is perfect for couples up to 6'6" (198 cm) or for those who wish to spread out.

Designed for hikers looking to take their adventures to the next level, the unmatched internal space of the Offset Duo can accommodate two large tapered 25" sleeping pads and is easily accessed through the wide L shaped zippers found on both sides of the tent.

Featuring zippered storm doors with peak vents to provide extra protection from wind and rain without sacrificing airflow inside the tent, the Offset Duo's storm doors are easy to open and close, allowing you to adjust as needed.

Strong magnetic door toggles, designed to ensure the doors stay rolled up in windy conditions, make it easy to secure the tent and screen doors out of the way without having to fumble with clunky closures.

Just like our flagship Duplex, the Offset Duo tent is lightweight, roomy, well-ventilated, packs down small, pitches easily, and can be set up in the tightest of spaces. You won’t find a lighter functional two person tent with this much space anywhere on the market.

An optional flat groundsheet is available for added protection here.

  • Constructed from Dyneema Composite Fabric with taped seams to keep water out. Dyneema Composite Fabric is ten times stronger than steel, is naturally waterproof, and is not treated with any potentially harmful chemicals such as flame retardants or water repellents.

  • This tent has fully enclosed ultralight insect netting. The holes in the screen are super tiny and even the smallest insects can not get through.

  • Sets up with two trekking poles or tent poles adjusted to around 48" (122 cm) at the peaks and an included 32" (81 cm) tent pole inserted into two integrated cups at the foot end of the tent. Trekking poles are not included but we have multiple Trekking Pole options to choose from.

If you do not use trekking poles, we have tent poles available.

  • The 48” poles are offset towards the head end of the tent creating a wide entryway with an L shaped zipper that drapes to help stop mosquitoes from chasing you into the tent. The offset poles also create a steeper wall with additional headroom.

The 32” pole at the foot further expands the best in class internal volume of the Offset Duo by providing copious amounts of foot room for taller hikers. If your partner has a third trekking pole available the 32" tent pole can be left home.

  • The unique pole configuration creates uniform, side to side, headroom which allows two adults to sit up next to each other with plenty of space to change their clothes without touching the walls or ceiling.  The large amount of practical usable space creates a superior user experience for couples when compared to the cramped interior of the steep asymmetrical walls found in other offset tent pole designs.

  • Seven stakes are required for this tent with eight stakes recommended for a taught pitch in windy conditions. Stakes are not included but we have a variety of Ultralight Stakes to choose from.

  • A smaller 53” x 100” (135 x 254 cm) corner to corner footprint allows you to squeeze into those hard to find backcountry flat spots, providing a decisive advantage over comparable asymmetrical designs with larger footprints that require almost 35 to 40% more flat space to properly set up.

  • Pitches just 4" (10 cm) off the ground which reduces drafts while still providing airflow around the perimeter.

  • Both entries feature zippered storm doors. Leave the larger downwind doors open on a nice night for a breeze and great views or close both doors to block cold wind and provide 360 degree rain protection.

The large downwind doors can be rolled up and out of the way with magnetic toggles.

  • There’s a screen between the bathtub floor and the walls at the ends of the tent. An adjustable cord keeps the bathtub floor elevated ensuring the screen slopes downward away from the bathtub. Any condensation will run down the walls and out through the downward sloping screens.

  • The tarp overhangs the bathtub floor by 3 inches (7.6 cm) all the way around. In calm rain or under wet trees the downwind doors can be left open for air flow without water dripping or falling into your living space. In almost all conditions at least one door can be left open for air flow.

For even better protection with a door open in the rain you can attach the cord at the foot of the bathtub floor to the screen door zipper to pull the screen door inwards away from rain spray.

  • Both sides feature a peak vent to increase air flow and help reduce condensation when the storm doors are closed.

  • Both entries feature a wide L shaped zipper which gives you ample space to get in and out of the tent or to quickly access to the vestibule spaces. The L shape allows the screen door to drape across the entry and reduce the amount of mosquitoes and insects that follow you into the tent. The screen rolls up and can be secured with a dedicated magnet toggle.

  • The two door set up makes it easy to get in and out of the tent without disturbing your partner.

  • This tent has a longer and wider sewn in bathtub floor that is 94” (239 cm) long and measures 50” (127 cm) wide from the head to mid torso before tapering down to 44” (112 cm) at the foot. The bathtub floor has 6" (15 cm) tall walls to keep you protected from groundwater or splash back.

  • The bathtub floor accommodates two large tapered 25” (63.5 cm) wide pads and allows two larger adults to lay side by side. There is plenty of space for two average size hikers to stretch out or, for a single taller hiker up to 6’6” (198 cm) with their gear.

  • The floor also includes integrated trekking pole flaps that allow you to pin down the floor with the tips of your trekking poles, or with 48" tent poles. This prevents the floor from blowing around, and also allows easy one-handed operation of the door zipper.

  • For added durability, the bathtub floor is made with Dyneema Composite Fabric material that is almost twice as thick as the standard canopy material and is more resistant to abrasions and punctures.

  • A separate groundsheet is NOT required for this shelter. The floor material is reasonably durable, and all Dyneema® Composite Fabric gear can be easily patched in the field with repair tape. If you do prefer to use a groundsheet as a precaution, Flat Groundsheets are available.

  • Inside you’ll find mesh pockets on each side of the tent for storing smaller items like a headlamp, glasses, or phone. This is where you will also find the repair tape that comes standard with all of our tents. The pocket is about 8" x 6" (20 cm x 15 cm).

  • Loops at each peak allow you to add our Gear Nest, hang your headlamp, or string a cord between both loops to hang items inside.

  • All zippers on the tent have been designed to allow the zippers sliders to easily be replaced in the field. Two replacement sliders are included with the tent. Zipper slider replacement instructions can be found here.

  • All tie outs feature LineLoc V adjusters and bright yellow Z-Line guylines, allowing you to lock in the perfect pitch.

  • Packs down small and fits in the provided DCF Medium Plus Stuff Sack.

  • All of our tents do pretty well in the wind. The material can handle high wind loads. As long as your stakes stay in the ground (use rocks if available) your tent will stay standing. Dyneema® Composite Fabric is not a particularly noisy fabric; however, almost any tent will make a little noise in the wind. Earplugs are not a bad idea for windy nights.

  • Dyneema Composite Fabric is naturally waterproof and is not treated with any potentially harmful chemicals such as flame retardants or water repellents. Our shelters are all PFC/PFAs free.

  • All Zpacks gear has a two year limited warranty against defects in materials or workmanship. Please see our return / warranty policy.

  • Made in the USA.

  • Our tents are made from Dyneema® Composite Fabric. Dyneema® Composite Fabric has several advantages over other materials:

    • High strength to weight ratio – the material can handle high wind force and does not tear easily.

    • Chemical free, PFC free

    • Waterproof – there is no DWR or coating to worry about wearing out. The material will not absorb significant water that will add water weight to your pack

    • Stretch-free – the tent will stay taut all night. Nylon material by comparison can stretch and sag, especially if it gets wet.

    • Taped seams – our seams are sewn for strength then taped water tight. The tie outs have bonded reinforcements for high strength. No seam sealing will be necessary!

    • Easily repairable – Any damage can easily be fixed in the field with our Dyneema® Composite Fabric Repair Tape.

  • This tent is semi-transparent. In bright sunlight, a fuzzy silhouette of a person sitting inside the tent would be visible, but you cannot see any details. It has a suitable amount of privacy for changing clothes.

In lower light (such as in the evening or at night), you cannot see through at all. We also have thicker, darker material available as an upgrade that you can choose. Another nice thing about this material is that you can see the outlines of trees and your surroundings for a more immersed outdoor experience.

  • This tent has fully enclosed .67 oz/sqyd (22.7 g/m²) insect screen. The holes in this screen are super tiny, so even the smallest insects cannot get through. Our tent screen is about 30% lighter than comparable Noseeum screen with no noticeable decrease in durability.
  • The bathtub floor is made from 1.0 oz/sqyd Dyneema® Composite Fabric. This material weight is about twice as thick as the canopy material and is more resistant to abrasion and punctures. It is also easy to patch with tape.
  • Lineloc V adjusters are sewn to all tie outs. Bright yellow 2.0mm Dyneema® Z-Line cord is cut and attached for you. The yellow lines are very easy to see night or day, and Dyneema® has very low stretch.
  • The expected life span of this shelter is at least one full 2500+ mile thru hike, or many years of casual use with some care.

.55 oz/sqyd Standard Dyneema® Composite Fabric

Available in Blue, Olive Drab, and White

The default canopy material choice on this tent is .55 oz/sqyd Dyneema® Composite Fabric. It has high tensile strength and can handle strong winds, storms, and all the typical conditions a tent will be in. All Dyneema® Composite Fabric material can easily be repaired in the field with the included repair tape if it were to get a puncture.

The material is semi-transparent, allowing you to see the silhouette of trees when looking out. In bright sunlight, you can see the fuzzy silhouette of a person when looking in, but it is opaque in low evening light.

Tensile Strength: 63 lb/in (552 N/5cm)

Puncture Strength:
1.8 lb (8 N)

Water Resistance:
 15,000 mmH₂O

Made in the USA.

.75 oz/sqyd Dyneema® Composite Fabric

Available in Burnt Orange, and Spruce Green

This canopy material has a higher Dyneema® thread count which gives it a higher tear strength. The standard material is already difficult to tear, so this weight is unnecessary. Many thru-hikers like this feature for added peace of mind.  It is also a bit thicker and darker than the standard weight. It is less transparent and offers more privacy.

Tensile Strength:
 104 lb/in (911 N/5cm)

Puncture Strength:
 3.1 lb (14 N)

Water Resistance:
 20,000 mmH₂O

Made in the USA.

1.0 oz/sqyd Dyneema® Composite Fabric

Our tent floor material is made with a membrane that is more than twice as thick as our canopy material. It is more puncture and abrasion resistant. This is the standard floor material on all of our tents.

Tensile Strength:
 104 lb/in (911 N/5cm)

Puncture Strength: 3.5 lb (15.5 N)

Water Resistance: 20,000 mmH₂O

.67 oz/sqyd Ultralight Nano-Noseeum Insect Netting

Regular "No-see-um" bug netting weighs about 1 oz/sqyd. This ultralight version weighs roughly a third less without a noticeable difference in performance. It has extremely small holes which block even the smallest of insects including mosquitoes, noseeums, etc. Nothing gets through this screen.

Cutting Guylines:

Guylines are pre-cut and attached for you. Linelocs are sewn in place for adjusting the lines. If you choose to switch out your lines for a different cord these are the default lengths:

Peaks (2x) - Cut 72 inches (183cm) and tie a stake loop at 20 inches (51 cm). The long end attaches to the tent and the short end attaches to the lineloc on the smaller storm door.

Head Wall - 48 inches (122 cm)

Trekking Pole Cup - 24" (61 cm) to tent body and 48" (122 cm) to ground.

Corners (cut 4x) - 24 inches (61 cm).

Setup Instructions:

The Offset Duo tent can be pitched with either end into the wind, however you may wish to have the open doors downwind. The head end of the tent is wider and is marked with Zpacks labels at the corners.

Splash-up can occur when camped on hard packed surfaces during heavy rain. Our tall bathtub floor and overhanging canopy helps to keep mud and water from splashing up into your tent, but for best results please choose camp spots on leaves or pine needles when possible. Remove any pointy twigs and sharp objects to protect your tent floor but leave as much rain-dampening cushioning as possible to minimize the potential of splash-up.

  1. Adjust your two trekking poles to around 48 inches (122 cm). Slightly longer or shorter may also work.

  2. Give your corner guylines some slack. Stake out all four corner guylines at a 45 degree angle, roughly straight off the corner points.

  3. Insert the front trekking pole outside the screen with the handle at the peak and the tip through the button hole on the trekking pole flap which is attached to the floor. If using a 48" tent pole, place the pole directly onto the flap. The flaps keeps the floor pinned down and makes one-handed zipping easier. Stake the front line and adjust it as necessary.

    • If the peak is too high, tighten the front corner lines. If it is too low, loosen them.

    • The corners of the tent should be about 4 inches (10 cm) or so off the ground.

  4. Insert the back trekking pole the same way and stake it out.

  5. Insert the 32" (81 cm) tent pole (or a third trekking pole) into the cups at the end of the tent with the tip downward. Adjust the guy lines until the pole is vertical before staking it into the ground.

  6. Stake out the wall guyline at the head end of the tent if desired.

  7. If the walls of the tent aren't smooth, you may need to reposition the corner stakes or adjust the lines tighter.

Storm Doors:

The larger doors can be zippered shut, or rolled up and secured open with the integrated magnet toggles. Leave at least one downwind door open for air flow when possible to minimize condensation. If you wish to leave a downwind door open in light rain, you can attach the hook located at the foot end of the tent to the zipper pull cord to pull the screen inward away dripping water.

Seam Sealing:

All Zpacks shelters have taped seams and bonded tie outs! No seam sealing necessary.
